Addiction

The term addiction has its roots in Roman law and was thought to mean, “surrender to a master.” This very accurately describes the concept of addiction. Typically, when we hear the term “addiction,” we associate it with the use of drugs or alcohol, but addiction also applies to compulsive behaviors like eating, sex, gambling, and viewing pornography. Individuals who struggle with addiction often find themselves under the control of their drug or compulsive behavior of choice. Despite their desire to quit, despite knowledge of the consequences, and despite all the will power in the world, they are unable to stop because their bodies won’t let them.

The Disease of Addiction

Addiction is a disease that takes a strong hold on the brain and affects the body’s physical chemistry. Overcoming addiction requires appropriate medical treatment AND counseling. Although rates of relapse are high for those struggling with addiction, research shows that treatment IS effective. Developing a relapse prevention plan, taking advantage of support groups, completing treatment, and engaging in long-term individual maintenance counseling are all part of a successful recovery process.

Symptoms of Addiction

There are a number of signs you might be addicted to a substance or behavior:

• Needing more of the substance to get the same effects (tolerance)
• Inability to stop substance or behavior even if you want to
• Using more of the substance than you planned
• Intense cravings for the behavior or substance
• Withdrawal symptoms if the behavior or substance is stopped
• Legal, personal, or relationship problems stemming from the substance or behavior
