In 1949 May was selected as the month to increase our awareness regarding mental health.

Originally, the month was focused on increasing the awareness surrounding the recovery from mental illness.

Today, it continues to focus on breaking the stigma associated with mental illness and seeking treatment, but it has expanded to wellness and mental health. For a long time there has been a focus on being aware and educated on taking care of yourself physically: exercise, proper nutrition, portions in moderation, hydration and quality sleep. Specifically, in the past decade there has been increase emphasis on our mental health and well-being.

The challenge in May is to be intentional about increasing our awareness of ourselves mentally and emotionally. Design routines to discipline our thinking and challenge negative patterns.

And develop habits to practice mindfulness.

Will you start this May to exercising for your mental health?
