Les Miserables II
I had an opportunity to watch Les Miserables performed by Spotlight at Rockford College this past weekend. I got to see it 2 of the 3 public showings, it was simple AMAZING! The talent of these young actors is over the top. Friday night’s opening performance was flawless. Standing ovation before the last song was even completed. More than once during the performance there was tears being shed by the audience as they were sitting on the edge of their seats.
If you have been struggling with seeing the good in humanity, come watch this show. The main character, Jean Valjean, is a convicted felon for stealing a piece of bread for his starving nephew. He serves 19 years in prison and is a “marked” convict. After making a choice to break parole and steal again, a priest shows him mercy and grants him pardon because of the great sacrifice of Christ allowing him to be forgiven. The priest asks for only one thing, he leaves and lives a life of a honest man.
Jean Valjean leaves vowing to be an honest man. But, Valjean is being chased by Javert, the keeper of the law, for breaking parole. In spite of his fear of being found out, Valjean keeps his vow to be a man of integrity. He makes a promise to a dying woman, Fantine, to care for her young daughter, Cosette. He lives out his life running from Javert but caring for Cosette. The story has many different twists and turns of love, sacrifice, friendship and courage.
If you have been struggling to see the good in people, come this weekend and watch how forgiveness, love and sacrifice conquers over hatred, greed and the darkness of this world. The story demonstrates how Jesus’s sacrifice allows us to be redeemed from our transgressions and then live a life honesty and integrity.
Come this weekend and see an amazing cast perform a story of how light conquers darkness.
Sincerely,
kevin polky
